Hyundai delays driver-assist software developed in-house until late 2029, two years beyond its earlier target. The automaker will use an Nvidia-based system in 2028 as an interim step while it continues building and training its proprietary Atria platform.

 

Hyundai’s revised autonomy roadmap has four central elements:

  • Proprietary driver-assistance software moves from late 2027 to late 2029.
  • Nvidia technology will support Level 2+ and Level 2++ vehicles in 2028.
  • Those vehicles will generate data used to refine Hyundai’s Atria software.
  • Both interim systems will still require active driver supervision.

 

Hyundai Delays Driver-Assist Software by Two Years

Hyundai Motor Group had planned to introduce its internally developed automated-driving software in late 2027. The new late-2029 timing exposes the difficulty of turning perception, prediction and vehicle-control models into reliable software for mass-produced cars.

 

The delay does not mean Hyundai is pausing advanced driver assistance. Park Min-woo, president of the group’s Advanced Vehicle Platform division, said Hyundai and Nvidia will co-design technology for a 2028 deployment while the Korean automaker develops its own platform.

 

Park joined Hyundai in January after working at Nvidia and has led the expanded relationship with the chipmaker. The strategy is a change from the more internally focused approach associated with his predecessor, Song Chang-hyeon, who left in December.

 

The revised schedule matters because software capability increasingly separates automakers even when their vehicles use similar batteries, cameras and processors. Hyundai and Kia must compete with Tesla and fast-moving Chinese manufacturers that already collect large volumes of real-world driving data.

 

Nvidia Hyperion 10 Bridges Hyundai’s 2028 Gap

Hyundai plans to deploy Nvidia’s Hyperion 10 platform in vehicles arriving in 2028. The first systems will use cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors rather than more expensive lidar, according to the company’s briefing.

 

The companies formally expanded their autonomous-driving partnership in March. Their agreement combines Hyundai’s software-defined vehicle work and fleet operations with Nvidia’s computing platform, training tools and driving software.

 

Hyundai describes the planned 2028 capabilities as Level 2+ and Level 2++. Those labels are not formal categories in the SAE automation scale, but the industry commonly uses them for increasingly capable supervised systems on highways and, at the higher end, more complex urban roads.

 

The supervision requirement is crucial. Drivers must continue watching the road and remain responsible for the vehicle, even if the system can steer, accelerate, brake or complete more complicated maneuvers for extended periods.

 

Atria Uses Hyundai and Kia Vehicles as a Data Engine

The Nvidia phase is designed to do more than fill a product gap. Hyundai intends to use data gathered from the deployed system to train and improve Atria, its proprietary automated-driving platform.

 

Hyundai and Kia together sell more than seven million vehicles annually, giving the group a potentially large foundation for gathering driving examples across countries, road designs and weather conditions. Scale alone is not enough, however; data must be representative, correctly labeled, governed and converted into measurable safety improvements.

 

At its August investor event, Hyundai said Atria would expand progressively across production vehicles, supporting a roadmap from Level 2+ assistance toward higher automation. The company expects its fleet strategy to help it surpass competitors in accumulated driving data by 2033.

 

That target makes 2028 vehicles part of a feedback loop: cars generate edge cases, engineers retrain models, and validated improvements can return through software updates or later vehicle generations. Hyundai will need clear privacy, consent and retention policies as that data program grows across jurisdictions.

 

Hyundai Keeps Lidar Open for Level 3

Hyundai is considering lidar for future Level 3 systems, which could permit hands-off driving under defined conditions. Park did not provide a commercial launch date for that phase.

 

The possible addition reflects a different safety problem from supervised assistance. When a system takes responsibility for the driving task inside its operating domain, sensor redundancy and a safe response to component failure become more demanding engineering requirements.

 

Cameras provide rich visual information, radar measures distance and relative speed, and ultrasonic sensors cover short-range detection. Lidar can add direct three-dimensional ranging, but it also increases hardware cost and integration complexity.

 

Hyundai’s new timeline creates three milestones readers can test against delivery: Nvidia-based supervised systems in 2028, proprietary Atria software in late 2029, and enough fleet data to overtake rivals by 2033. Until vehicles reach customers, each remains a target rather than a completed deployment.
