Roblox unveils AI Scene Generator technology that will turn text prompts and reference images into functional game layouts, alongside non-player characters designed to test creators’ games. The tools were announced at the Roblox Developers Conference on September 11, 2026.

Roblox Unveils AI Scene Generator at RDC 2026

The Scene Generator is scheduled for later in 2026. According to Reuters’ September 11 report, creators will be able to provide both a written prompt and a reference image, then receive a functional layout rather than a flat concept image.

 

That distinction is central to Roblox’s strategy. A useful generated scene must include editable geometry and objects that work inside a game engine, giving creators a starting environment they can modify, script and publish instead of an image that merely depicts one.

 

Roblox also plans non-player characters that can playtest games. Automated players could repeatedly explore a level, expose broken paths and reveal design problems before an experience reaches a large audience. The company has not yet published detailed performance benchmarks or a release date for the NPC system.

 

The official RDC 2026 announcement places Scene Generation within a larger Studio roadmap that includes better asset-moderation feedback, collaboration tools and observability. Roblox is treating AI generation as one stage in a development workflow, not as a separate novelty.

 

Build Has Already Produced About 9,000 Games

Scene Generator extends Roblox’s mobile-first Build product, introduced in July. Build lets a user describe a game in natural language, generate a playable starting point, test it and publish without first learning the full Roblox Studio interface.

 

Roblox told Reuters that users have published about 9,000 games through Build. More significantly, 71% of the people who created one had never used Roblox Studio, evidence that prompt-based creation is reaching users outside the platform’s established developer community.

 

In its original Build announcement, Roblox said the system combines open-source and proprietary models. It can work across game mechanics, environments, characters, visual style and sound, while sharing its back end and conversation history with Studio.

 

The company is also developing specialized agents for professional creators. Its July roadmap described a playtesting agent that finds bugs, an analytics agent that answers questions about game performance and an experiment agent that proposes tests for engagement, retention and monetization.

 

Standalone Apps Take Roblox Games Beyond Roblox

The conference announcement also expands where Roblox-built games can run. Creators will be able to distribute their experiences as standalone applications across mobile devices, PCs and consoles while Roblox supplies the underlying technology and services.

 

By the end of 2026, Roblox plans to let players join games through Chrome from an Experience Details page without installing the Roblox app. Support for additional browsers is expected later, potentially reducing the friction between seeing a game link and entering its world.

 

Creators will also be able to combine online and offline play in one title. That enables single-player campaigns and use without a network connection, a meaningful change for a platform historically associated with persistent online social experiences.

 

These distribution changes widen the potential market for AI-assisted games. They also make quality control more important: a generated project that ships as a standalone app must handle device differences, updates, safety checks and offline behavior with less dependence on the familiar Roblox container.

 

AI Creation Meets Roblox’s Scale and Safety Rules

Roblox said its platform averaged 123 million daily users in the quarter ending June 30, while game visits rose 55% from a year earlier. Creators earned approximately $1.7 billion through its DevEx program over the preceding 12 months, according to the conference announcement.

 

That scale gives new creation tools immediate reach, but it also magnifies moderation and discovery risks. Lowering the cost of producing a playable game can increase experimentation and help small teams; it can also flood the catalog with repetitive or unsafe content if review systems cannot keep pace.

 

Roblox says Build-created games enter the same extended review process and retention-based discovery pool as other experiences. The platform’s response to low-quality generation is therefore behavioral: games that fail to retain players should not receive sustained distribution, regardless of how quickly they were produced.

 

The next evidence will come from execution. Scene Generator must create layouts that remain editable and technically coherent, while NPC playtesters must find defects that matter to real players. Roblox’s roughly 9,000 Build-published games establish early adoption; creator retention and game quality will show whether the tools change production at scale.
