Apple Launches Siri AI With iOS 27
Apple launches Siri AI with iOS 27 on September 14, turning its long-delayed assistant overhaul into a public product release. Apple’s live product pages say the English-language rollout is beginning alongside iOS 27, while iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27 and visionOS 27 extend the system across its device portfolio.
The release introduces four central capabilities:
- Natural, multi-turn conversations with broad web knowledge
- Personal-context search across messages, mail, photos and notes
- Onscreen awareness and actions inside supported apps
- Private processing split between devices and Apple’s cloud
Apple Siri AI Launch Reaches Supported Devices
Apple’s current Siri AI page says new Apple Intelligence features are available starting September 14 and that Siri AI is rolling out in English. The accompanying iOS 27 page lists the operating system as available from the same date, making this the public-release event rather than another developer preview.
The rollout starts with iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, every iPhone 16 model and later supported generations. On tablets, eligibility includes the A17 Pro iPad mini and iPads using M1 chips or newer. Macs with M1 or later, the A18 Pro MacBook Neo and Apple Vision Pro are also included.
Apple Watch access requires a Series 9 or later, Ultra 2 or later, or Watch SE 3 paired with an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone. Apple also says its most powerful on-device model and advanced dictation require newer hardware, including iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro models, recent high-memory iPads and Macs.
That hardware split creates two Siri AI tiers in practice. A broad group receives the redesigned assistant, while newer processors and higher memory configurations unlock the most demanding local model. The distinction matters because Apple is using local execution as both a performance feature and part of its privacy positioning.
Siri AI Adds Personal Context and App Actions
The new assistant can search a user’s messages, email, photos and notes to retrieve information expressed in everyday language. Apple’s examples include finding a recommendation sent by a friend, locating a confirmation number in an older email and surfacing photographs from a previous trip.
Personal context is paired with onscreen awareness. Siri AI can answer questions about visible text, images and files, then move from an answer to an action. Apple says users can draft messages, edit and share photographs, create reminders, modify calendar events and control media without rebuilding those tasks manually in each app.
A dedicated Siri app stores conversations for later review. On iPad and Mac, Apple has also integrated the assistant with Spotlight and system context menus. Visual Intelligence expands the same idea to the camera and screen, allowing a user to identify objects, retrieve information or begin an action from what the device can see.
The design pushes Siri beyond short voice commands toward the agent-style interaction now common in standalone AI products. The strategic difference is distribution: Apple can place the assistant inside operating-system controls, personal data stores and first-party apps used across a large installed base.
Google Gemini Sits Beneath Apple’s Model Strategy
Apple built the product around Apple Intelligence, but Google supplies an important foundation. In January, Reuters reported that Apple selected Google’s Gemini models under a multiyear agreement for the revamped Siri and future Apple Intelligence features. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The arrangement gives Apple access to frontier model technology without surrendering the operating-system layer or its privacy architecture. It also gives Google a route into Apple’s ecosystem beyond search and individual Gemini applications, strengthening its position against OpenAI and other model providers competing for consumer distribution.
Apple’s product presentation focuses on the experience rather than model branding. For users, the meaningful tests will be whether Siri reliably understands context, completes multi-step requests and avoids destructive or unintended actions. For developers, Spotlight integration offers a path for third-party app information to become available to Siri with user permission.
Private Cloud Compute and Regional Limits
Apple says many requests run on the device. More complex work can be sent to Private Cloud Compute, where larger server models process only the data required for the request. The company says that information is not stored and that the privacy claims can be independently verified.
Some server-backed Apple Intelligence features have usage limits, and Apple says increased access is included with most iCloud+ plans. That introduces a commercial layer to the rollout: core assistant access may be broad, but the heaviest generative workloads can be metered according to cloud capacity and subscription level.
Availability is not uniform. Apple says Siri AI is initially rolling out in English. Mac and Vision Pro users in the European Union can access it on supported languages, but the company is withholding the initial iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch release there while it works through regulatory requirements.
China is excluded from Siri AI and the new Apple Intelligence features while Apple addresses local rules. Those limits prevent the September 14 release from being a fully global launch and leave two strategically important markets outside the broad mobile rollout.
The launch still represents Apple’s most consequential attempt to convert generative AI into a default consumer interface. Adoption will depend less on benchmark claims than on daily reliability, supported-device penetration and whether Apple can deliver personal context without weakening the privacy guarantees used to differentiate Siri AI.
