Google Home MCP is opening Google’s smart-home infrastructure to third-party AI agents, allowing compatible assistants to inspect devices, monitor live states, issue commands and analyze household event history. According to Google’s developer documentation, agents can retrieve the layout of a home, examine device capabilities, read current telemetry and execute parameterized actions. That creates a foundation for assistants that reason across several devices rather than responding to one voice command at a time.

 

Historical access expands the range of possible tasks. An agent could examine state changes over a selected period, answer what happened while a user was away, or identify patterns across lighting, appliances and other connected equipment. Google says responses can be grounded in the home’s own telemetry.

 

Premium Access and Cloud Setup Limit the Initial Rollout

Home MCP is launching as an early-access product rather than a one-click consumer feature. Users need an active Google Home setup, a Google Home Premium Advanced subscription, a Google Cloud project and an MCP-compatible client.

 

Setup requires enabling the Home API, configuring an OAuth consent screen and creating credentials for the chosen agent. The user then completes a Google Home permissions flow and selects the home structure the agent may access. Access can later be revoked through the Google Home app or Google account controls.

 

The Verge reports that availability is limited initially to US subscribers on the Premium Advanced tier, priced at $20 per month or $200 per year, with access rolling out over the coming weeks.

That openness also raises the stakes for permission design and auditability. As agents gain longer-running tasks and broader context, users will need clear records of what each system accessed, which commands it attempted and why an action was allowed or blocked.
