More than 1,100 employees and researchers from leading AI companies, including OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, Meta, Microsoft and other organizations, have signed a public statement urging governments to prepare for a future where AI systems may begin automating AI research itself.

 

The group argues that progress is accelerating so quickly that policymakers should not wait until these capabilities become widely available before putting safeguards in place.

 

The warning centers on a concept known as automated AI research. Today, AI models already help programmers write software, assist scientists with data analysis and support engineers in solving complex technical problems.
