The internet was built around a simple assumption: people would open websites, click links, read pages and interact with online services themselves. That assumption is beginning to change rapidly as artificial intelligence becomes capable of browsing the web, searching for information and performing tasks on behalf of users. 

 

Cloudflare reported that non-human traffic has now crossed the 50% mark in its measurement of internet traffic, showing just how quickly automated systems, crawlers and AI agents are changing the structure of the web.

 

For years, a website's success was largely measured by how many human visitors it could attract. More visitors meant more page views, more advertising opportunities, more customers and more revenue. AI agents introduce a different kind of visitor because a machine can access information from a website without necessarily opening the page for a human to see. One AI system can potentially visit and process information from thousands of pages far faster than an individual person ever could.

 

That creates a strange new situation for website owners. A website may receive enormous amounts of automated activity while seeing much smaller growth in actual human visitors. The information on the site can still be valuable, but the way that information is discovered is changing. Instead of a person searching Google, opening several results and reading them individually, an AI system can collect information from multiple sources and provide the user with a single answer.

 

Cloudflare has described this broader shift as the agentic Internet, where AI systems increasingly act between people and online services. The company says more than half of internet traffic is now non-human and has been developing tools that allow website owners to distinguish between search crawlers, AI training crawlers and agents using content on behalf of users.

 

The change could be enormous for publishers. A news website, for example, traditionally depends on people clicking articles and spending time on the site. An AI agent could instead read the article, combine its information with several other sources and give the user a summary without the user ever visiting the original page. The publisher's content still influenced the answer, but the traditional website visit may never happen.

 

This creates a new question for the entire online publishing industry: how do websites remain valuable when AI can consume their information without sending the same number of people back? Search engine optimization was designed around helping pages appear in search results, but the next stage may require websites to become useful not only to humans and search engines, but also to AI systems that decide which information deserves to appear in their answers.

 

The opportunity is not necessarily to fight AI agents. In many cases, websites may eventually need to make their content easier for trustworthy AI systems to understand while finding ways to benefit when those systems use it. Cloudflare is already describing a future where website owners can control how AI companies access their content and measure how that content is being consumed by AI systems.

 

For users, the transition could make the internet feel completely different. Instead of manually opening websites whenever they need information, people could increasingly ask an AI assistant to investigate something for them. The AI could search across websites, compare information, identify relevant details and return an answer without requiring the user to navigate through dozens of pages.

 

That could make the web dramatically more efficient, but it also creates a new problem: what happens when AI becomes the main reader of the internet? If AI systems increasingly consume information and then generate new information from what they have read, the internet could gradually contain more machine-generated material being used as input for other machines.

 

Researchers have already begun studying this problem and have proposed an “agent-first” redesign of the web. Their work argues that the traditional internet was designed primarily around human visitors, while AI agents introduce different requirements involving identification, access, content structure and economic models.

 

This could eventually change how websites are built. A page might still look exactly the same to a human visitor, but behind the scenes it could provide structured information specifically designed for AI agents. Businesses may need to make product information, pricing, availability, documentation and other important data easier for machines to understand accurately.

 

The biggest change, however, could happen in the relationship between AI and search. Search engines historically helped people find websites. AI assistants increasingly help people obtain answers directly. That means the competition may gradually shift from “Can Google show my page?” to “Can an AI system find, understand and trust my information?”

 

For website owners, this does not mean traditional SEO is disappearing overnight. Search engines will continue to send human visitors, and websites will still need strong content, technical performance, authority and discoverability. But AI-generated answers are becoming another important route through which information can reach people.

 

The internet could therefore become a place where humans and AI agents browse simultaneously, but for completely different reasons. Humans will continue reading, watching, shopping and communicating, while AI agents will increasingly search, compare, purchase, book, research and perform tasks. Cloudflare's recent business results also show that companies are already investing heavily in infrastructure designed to support the growing AI-agent ecosystem.

 

The most interesting part is that this transition is happening before most people realize how significant it is. A person can still open a browser and browse the web exactly as they did years ago, while thousands of automated systems are simultaneously moving through websites in the background. The internet may look familiar on the surface, but the population using it is changing.

 

Over the next few years, the best websites may not simply be the ones that attract the most human clicks. They could also be the ones that become reliable sources for AI systems, provide information in a format machines can understand and maintain enough authority that AI assistants continue choosing them as trusted sources.

 

The internet is therefore entering a new phase where human traffic is no longer the only traffic that matters. AI agents are becoming another major audience, and unlike human visitors, they can operate continuously, process enormous amounts of information and interact with thousands of websites in a very short period.

 

The next evolution of the web may not be a new browser or another search engine. It may be a web where humans increasingly tell AI what they want, and AI agents handle much of the searching, comparing and clicking behind the scenes.

The internet was built for people. It is now being rebuilt for people and machines at the same time.
